BioGene is currently developing QuType™, an instrument to detect Sepsis and identify the causative organism in less than an hour utilising UltraRapid PCR technology. The work is funded by Innovate UK and is in collaboration with the University of Hull.
"Sepsis is a life threatening condition that arises when the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. Sepsis leads to shock, multiple organ failure and death especially if not recognized early and treated promptly." - The UK Sepsis Trust
QuType™ will be used at the point of care to guide treatment of patients showing the symptoms of Sepsis:
QuType™ will be easy to use and require minimal input with no prior skills required, giving clear results including typing and species identification. A wide range of target organisms will be included in order to be of the most benefit to clinicians.
The aim is to allow informed and effective treatment much earlier than other methods with a reduction in use of broad spectrum antibiotics. Combined with faster diagnosis this will lead to lower mortality and faster recovery plus cost reductions for the NHS due to shorter hospital stays.
